January 31 start date for 2014 filing season

The IRS has announced plans to open the 2014 filing season on Jan. 31, 2014. This date falls squarely within the one- to two-week delay that it projected in October following the 16-day federal government closure.

The IRS noted that the April 15 tax deadline is set by statute and will remain in place. However, it also reminded taxpayers that anyone can request an automatic six-month extension to file his tax return.
